A recent cardiometabolic forum hosted by Getz Pharma brought attention to a critical issue: the rapid increase of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. Hussein Bagha, a consultant nephrologist and physician, moderated a session on cardiorenal disease and emphasized the significant strain these diseases are placing on the region's economies.
The forum highlighted a concerning rise in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and cardiovascular disease (CVD) across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. Bagha and other experts stressed the importance of managing conditions like type 2 diabetes and hypertension.
They pointed out that these conditions can be effectively controlled through medication and lifestyle changes. By proactively managing these NCDs, Sub-Saharan African nations can significantly reduce the risk of developing CKD and CVD, ultimately lessening the burden on healthcare systems and economies.
